Halfpenny Cottage is perfectly situated to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the Southern Lakes. With walks on bridleways and footpaths right from the door there's no excuse for not pulling on your boots and getting out in the fresh air!  You can walk over the fell into Newby Bridge and enjoy superb views from the top. The other side of the valley has a network of walks through the wood and quiet roads for cycling or walking.  Within a few miles there are many of the well known places such as Ambleside, Grizedale Forest, Hawkshead, Lake Coniston and the stunning Langdale Valley.

In Windermere, Ambleside and Ulverston there are many attractions to visit and things to do - all within a short drive by car or public transport.

We can recommend fine fare at the Swan Inn, Newby Bridge, recently refurbished and with a lovely riverside location

5 minute drive away

For those who would like a wide choice of beer the Masons Arms at Strawberry Bank can be reached in 15 minutes by car and it has over 200 on offer! They also serve great food in a beautiful location

        There is a pub with food and a restaurant at the Whitewater Hotel which can be reached on foot in 5 minutes. 
        The Rusland Pool Hotel and Restaurant has an excellent restaurant and is 10 minutes by car.

 

Provisions/Shopping

Pleasant walk to local shop/post office in Backbarrow.  The leisure centre at the Whitewater Hotel has a shop with basic items such as milk, bread and newspapers.  In Windermere and Ulverston there is a Booths supermarket in which you will find everything you'd expect to find at a large supermarket.  Petrol, newspapers and provisions can be found at the Texaco garage at Newby Bridge.

Further away is the beautiful market town of Kendal where you will find a mix of all the famous high street names, factory outlets and speciality shops. There is an outdoor market on Wednesday and Saturday when all the market stalls line the centre of town along Stramongate and Market Place. The Indoor Market is open 6 days a week.
